January 9 - In Beaumont, Texas, the discovery of oil at Spindletop marks the beginning of oil finds in the state.
February 1 - The Army Nurse Corp. is formed.
February 25 - The United States Steel Corporation is incorporated.
September 2 - Theodore Roosevelt advises: "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
September 6 - President William McKinley is shot by Leon Czolgosz in Buffalo, New York and dies on September 14th.
October 24 - Anna Edson Taylor is the first person to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
